MACNOAH: A Galloway surname now rare, Naoi is the older Gaelic form of Noah (Watson). Noah, abbot of Kingarth in Bute, died 789-90 (AU. ). John M'Noe was indweller at Bridsend, parish of Troqueer, 1658 (Dumfries), and James M'Knoe was "burrow officer in Drumfries," 1687 (RPC., 3 ser. XIII, p. 169). Marion McNoe was registered 'papist' in the bounds of the Presbytery of Dumfries, 1705 (MCM., III, p. 419), Jean M'Noe appeers in Dumfries, 1715 (Dumfries), and James M'Noah appears in Bersalloch, 1790 (Wigtown).
