MACNUTT: A variant of Macnaught (of Kilquhanite, Galloway), q. v. The Macnutts of Londonderry (now Manchester, New Hampshire, U. S. ) are descended from William McNaught who settled there in 1718. (2) The Irish Macnutts are said to be MaclNuadat, from Nuadha, an early Irish personal name. Nuadu Argatlam (of the Silver Hand) was the name of an ancient Irish deity.

It is a surname, which derived from the Pictish clan MacNaghten. The clan is said to have originated from antiquity in Perthshire, near Glen Lyon, and moved to Argyll sometime at the end of the first millennia.
The McNaughts split from the parent clan at the behest of King Robert the Bruce (in the 14th Century) in order to take up lands in the South West of Scotland, which were previously owned by the Clan MacDougall.
