The Surnames of Scotland (1946) by George Fraser Black (1866-1948)

Patrick as a surname, even in Ireland, is usually of Scottish origin: Patrick, also called MacPatrick, is a sept of the clan Lamont. Both are fairly frequent in the Ulster hearth money rolls. Patrick is more numerous in Ulster than in the other provinces. Though Scottish names may be expected there it is probable that some of the Ulster Patricks are descendants of families formerly called Mulpatrick (Ó Maol Phádraig). O'Mulpatrick, now practically obsolete, was listed as a principal Irish name in the “census” of 1659 both in east Fermanagh and in the Granard district of Co. Longford. O'Mulpatrick, however, appears more often in Munster in early records: it was the name of the erenagh family of Mungret, Co. Limerick: as far back as 1306 an O'Mulpatrick was a Cork juror and Munster Mulpatricks figure in the Elizabethan Fiants, as indeed do MacPatricks, though the latter are located mainly in Queen's County and Wexford in that voluminous source. These, however, were probably Fitzpatricks. That is possible also in the case of the fifteen families called Patrick who are in the Co. Tipperary hearth money rolls of 1664. One, Rory MacPatrick, is definitely stated in the Ulster Plantation documents relating to Co. Armagh to be a native Irishman not a planter. The earliest reference I have met to Patrick as a surname is in Archbishop Alen's Register to a canon of St. Patrick's in 1229, but his name may have been ephemeral; in 1256 it is quite definitely a surname in Counties Wicklow, Carlow and Waterford.
