MACPHEDRAN, Macphedron, Macphedran: Gaelic MacPheadarain, 'Son of little Peter, ' or 'Peterkin' from Gaelic Peadair, with diminutive -an."The M'Pheidirans of Argyle-shire own themselves to be originally" Macaulays (Enquiry, p. 100). The native home of the Clan Pheadirean (Patersons) was on the north side of Lochfyne, where they were formerly numerous (CG, II, p. 359). Dominicus (i. e. Maeldonich) M'Fedran and his heirs male had charter of the one mark land of Sonnachan, Argyllshire, 1349, as attested by a notarial copy made in 1488 (Notes and Queries, 11 July, 1931, p. 21). Duncan glas M'Pheddrein held land of Port Sonnachan, 1629, and Gilpatrick M'Pheddrin was sasine witness, 1650 (ibid., p. 44, 47). John M'Federan in Finisharne, parish of Glassrie, 1707 (Argyll).
