McPolin Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Woulfe's suggestion that Poland and Polin are variants of the same name must be taken with reserve.

Polin and MacPolin are found now almost exclusively in Counties Armagh and Down, and MacPolin is in the 1664-5list of Co. Armagh householders. Poland on the other hand is essentially an Offaly name, even if it is occasionally used as a synonym of Polin in Ulster. We can accept the derivation of Polin and MacPolin from Paulin, a diminutive of Paul; I have yet to find authoritative evidence for the derivation of Poland. Monsignor MacPolin of the Maynooth Mission to China was prefect-apostolic in Korea during the second World War.
