McRaild Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

MACRAILD: Gaelic MacRaild or M'Ra'ilt, from Gaelic Harailt, M. Irish Aralt, from N. Haralder, whence Harold, Herold. There are some families of this name on the Macleod estates who are popularly supposed to be descended or named from Mac Raild Armuinn, a Danish knight of the reign of Alexander III (Mackenzie, Macleods, p. 6). The widow of McRalte, a tenant, appears in Strathdee, 1527 (Grant, III. p. 68). The MacRailds of Clan Tarralaich were associated with Petty, near Inverness. Daniel M'Raill was resident in Edinbergh, 1700 (Edinb. Marr). Dr. George Henderson says that "when the name appears as in Cladh an Easbuig Eraild, the old name of Muckairn burying-ground, the long vowel form Raild does not occur, so that Raild possibly may be from Ragnoll, Ra'uill, with epithetic t,-in either case Norse" (Norse influence, p. 54). The derivation from N. Harald-r seems to be more probable.
