MACCRAITH, Maccheath: Forms of Macrae, which see, now current in the shires of Ayr and Lanark. Adam M'Creich witnessed a charter in Ayr, 1438 (Friars Ayr, p. 49). John Makmekrathe (= son of Macrath), chaplain, appears as wihiess in Ayr, 1477 (RMS., II, 1370), and William McAge McRethe, parishioner of Duthil, is recorded in 1537 (Grant, III, p. 269). John Makcreith in the barony of Cumnok, 1535 (RMS., III, 1887). Sir Robert McCraith, vicar of Kilmalie (Golspie), 1545 (OPS., II, p. 648). Agnes M'Krayth, liferenter in Dornoch, 1584, Alexander M'Kraith, burgess there, 1603, and Alexander M'Craithe and James M'Raith, his son, mentioned 1630 (ibid., p. 640,644). William Macreth in Brualand, witness in 1625, appears in the following year as McCreiff and McCreith (OSS., I, 132,143).
