MACCRAIN, MaCchane: Gaelic Mac Crain, 'son of the pig-' The name of a long-lived family in Jura. The name also occurred in Islay in the seventeenth century, Murdoch M'Rayne held a kerrowran there in 1686 (Bk. Islay, p. 504). With the secondary genitive in -ich we have John M'Ranich gorme M'Kay in 1642, and Donald gorme M'Ranie choll of the same date and place, Ballinicill. Martin (WI., p. 234) mentions one Gillouir Mack Crain in Jura who "liv'd to have kept one hundred and eighty Christmasses in his own house;" and a stone in the old burying ground of Inver-Lussa is inscribed: "Mary Mac Crain, died 1856, aged 128. Descendant of Gillour Mac Crain, who kept 180 Christmases in his own house, and who died in the reign of Charles I." compare the Border surnames Swine and Swinton.
