MACROBB: son of Robb, ' from the Scots diminutive of Robert. Some of this name are ranked as a sept of Stewarts, descended from a natural son of Robert, son of Dugald, first of Appin (Sliochd Ailein 'ic Rob'). The lands occupied by them were Glenduror, Lettermore, and Acharn in Duror (Appin Stewarts, p. 184-185). Buchanan has a sept of the name descended from Robert, a member of the family of Buchanan of Leny, and residing mainly in the parishes of Callander and Kilmadock (Buchanan, p. 107). Henry McRob was 'mair' of Menteith in 1458 (ER., VI, p. 423), Andrew M'Robe, witness at Lochlevyn, 1546 (Rollok, 3), Patrick Makrob was admitted burgess of Aberdeen in 1551 (NSCM., I, p. 63), caution was found for John McRob in Ayrshire in 1584 (RPC., III, p. 714), and John McRob is recorded in Brahan in 1726 (HP., II, p. 338). Some Macrobs formerly in Ardeonaig who assumed the name Macdonald are now in Aberfeldy (FB., p. 371). The surname Grub is possibly a shortened form. McRobe.
