MACSPADDAN, Macspadden: John M'Speddan in Air, 1531, acknowledged himself in debt to Sir Gavin Fullarton (Ros, 1141). John Downlop to make payment to Katerene Mc spadane for 'þe wrangus putten away of hyr dochtyr, ' 1564 (Prestwick, p. 68). Complaint was made against John McSpedene in Ayrshire, 1578 (RPC., III, p. 43), John Mc Spading appears in Knockindale in 1588 (RPC., IV, p. 328), and Archibald Maxspadane was merchant of the toune of Ayre, 1590 (CSPS., X, p. 237). William McSpiddane in Windeehill, prosecuted for usury in 1615 (RPC., X, p. 411), may be William Mo Speddane, maltman in Hafflour prosecuted for overcharge in malting, 1620 (ibid., XII, p. 352). Hew Makspeaden was a merchant in Edinburgh, 1658 (Edinb. Marr. ), Thomas M'Speddan was a writer (lawyer) there, 1688 (Inputs,, 6897), and John McSpadden was a graduate of the University of Glasgow, 1818. Samuel Mo Spadden (1756-1834), a Scots Presbyterian emigrant to Virginia and Tennessee, became a soldier in the Revolutionary Army, and made the powder used by the American army in the battle of New Orleans, 1815. In the U. S. the name is also current as MacSpaden and Mac Spedon.
