MACSPORRAN: Gaelic Mac-an-sporain, 'son of the perse. ' in popular tradition the Macsporrans are said to have been hereditary persebearers to the lords of the Isles. Martin (W. I., p. 262), when mentioning the tombs in Iona, says: "in the West-end is the Tombs of Gilbrid and Paul Sporran, antient tribes of the Mack Donalds." Duncan M'Sparren was one of M'Nachtane's soldiers shipped at Lochkilcherane for service in France, 1627 (HP., II, p. 115). M. Robertson said that Macsporain is merely a Gaelic rendering of the imnorted name Percell, but on the other hand it has been recently said (Weekly Scotsman, Jan. I, 1938) that when clan names were proscribed after the '45 the name Macporran was Anglicized Pursell. The Irish form of the name is Macsparran. King Malcolm II (1005-34) is credited in tradition with having a treasurer called Paul na Sporan or Paul of the Purse.
