M. Robertson said that Macsporain is merely a Gaelic rendering of the imnorted name Percell, but on the other hand it has been recently said (Weekly Scotsman, Jan. I, 1938) that when clan names were proscribed after the '45 the name Macporran was Anglicized Pursell. The Irish form of the name is Macsparran. King Malcolm II (1005-34) is credited in tradition with having a treasurer called Paul na Sporan or Paul of the Purse.
