MACTURK: A Galwegian surname. Gaelic MocTuirc 'son of Tore, ' from tore, a boar. John Makturk in Mekle Ariewland in the barony of Mochrum, is in record in 1538 (RMS., III, 1912). Bessie Makturck was married in Edinbergh in 1621 (Edinb. Marr. ), John Makterke, servitor of George Stewart of Robertoun appears in 1624 (Laing, 1938), and John M'Tuik is recorded in the parish of Cersphairn in 1674 (Kirkcudbright). Several persons of this name were charged with being disorderly (i. e. non-conforming) in the parish of Cersfern, 1684 (RPC., 3. ser. IX, p. 574,576). John Macterk, parish schoolmaster of Tillicoultry nearly a century ago, was a man of wide culture.
