MACVANISH, Macvenish, Macvinish: In Gaelic MacMhanuis, 'son of Manus, ' a personal name among the Macdonalds and the Macleans. The name is from the Norse Magnuss, which again is from Latin magnus, 'great, ' as in Carolus Magnus (= Charlemagne). The first persons in record who bore this name in the Western Isles are Magnus mac Arailt, a chieftain from the Hebrides in 972, and Magnus Berna from Limerick (Bugge, The Royal race of Dublin, p. 16). The name is found mainly in the shires of Ross and Inverness. Ewin Johne Makvanis in the Black Isle, 1500 (Rose, p. 169). Donald McWeynish, witness in Inverness, 1686 (Rec. Inv., II, p. 343), Malcolm MacVinish of Kerameanach, North Uist, is in record in 1718. The Laoidh Mhanuis, 'Lay of Magnus, ' according to the late Dr. George Henderson (Norse influence, p. 51), is the framework of Macpherson's Fingal.
