MACVITIE, Macvittie, Macvittae, Macwittie: Surnames of Ayrshire and Galloway. Thomas M'Vcthee, a witness in Galloway, 1560 (Laing, 807). Robert Makvetie and John Makvetie were witnesses in Lanark, 1574 (RPC., II p 385). William McVite in Hawick was described in 1627 as a masterless person fit for the wars (ibid., 2. ser. II, p. 85). Margaret McVittie and Gavin McViltle were examined for the Test in Tinwald, 1685 (ibid., 3. ser. XI, p. 433,434), and William McVittie in Hartbush was charged in 1686 with attending conventicles (ibid., XII, p. 407). Woulfe says the name is from Irish Mac an bhiadh-thaigh, 'son of the hospitaller, ' but this does not seem likely.
