MACWALTER, Macqualter: Gaelic MacBhaltair, 'son of Walter ' q. v. John Makwatter and Ewin McWalter, followers of the earl of Cassilis, were respited for murder in 1526 (RSS., I, 3386). John Graham McWalter in Duchry was fined for reset of outlawed Macgregors, 1613 (RPC., XIV, p. 640), Parian M'Walter of Auchinvennell, 1619 (Sasines, II, 66), David M'Waltir in Mayboill, a witness in 1621 (Laing, 1879), and William McWattir in Kilkerrane, Ayr, charged with molestation in 1628 (RPC., 2. ser. II, p. 543). William M'Walter, 'teughter' in Ferne, a witness there 1675, George M'Watter, witness in Ayr, 1665 (Laing, 2745, 2595), and Margaret McWater in the parish of Portpatrick, 1684 (Parish) M'Qualter 1667, M'Quatter 1663, McVater 1684. An old form of the name in Galloway was Macquhalter.
