MACWARD: Gaelic Mac a' bhaird, 'son of the bard. ' Fergus Mackabard made a gift of the church of Dunsyer with all its pertinents to the Abbey of Kelso between 1165 and 1214 (Kelso, p. 16,316, 319). Cosmo lnnes's suggestion that he was "perhaps of the family of Laird, in which Fergus was of old an accustomed name" (OPS., I, p. 129), I think unlikely. Sir Patrick Makbard was granted the chaplainry of S. Columba in Bute, 1516 (RSS., I, 2775). Robert Makewarde, a servant, who became professor of Humanitie in the old college of St. Andrews in 1560 (Lamont, Diary, p. 16), was afterwards minister of the Scots Congregation in Rotterdam. The name is now probably merged in Baird. McCuard and Mc Cward 1653.
Originally Mac-an-bhaird, 'The Bard’s Son.' ‘The sons of Mac-an-Baird. ' It is very t uncommon.
