MACWATTIE: A Highland Border name, in Gaelic MacBhaididh. 'son of Wattie' or 'Watty, ' a shortened or pet form of Walter, q. v. Buchanan says the MacWatties were a sept of the Buchanans of Leny (from Walter, son of John, second of that name, laird of Leny early in the sixteenth century), some of whom found their way to Argyll and elsewhere, but the name occurs much earlier One fourth of the lands of Parcy was let to John Makwatty in 1446 (Cupar-Angus, I, p. 128). Robert Lany alias Buchquhannane M'Watte is a charter witness in 1557 (RMS., IV, 1214). Several individuals of this name were concerned in the burning and spoiling of the lands of Moyness in 1602 (Rose, p. 292). Gilbert McWattie in Innerrane was fined for reset of Clan Gregor in 1613 (RPC., XIV, p. 644), and James McWatty was fined 6s. 8d. for 'playing at the futeball on the Sabboth nicht' in 1630 (Eigin, II, p. 215). The name is also current in the form Macquattie, q. v.
