MACWATT: A Highland border and Moray and Black Isle name formed from Wat or Watt the Lowland diminutive of Walter. Donald and Gilbert Makwat were the king's couriers in 1455, and the former appears again as king's courier in 1462 as MacVat (ER., VI, p. 105; VII, p. 155). Symon M'Wat is in record in Bute in 1491 (ALA., p. 204). Cuthbert McQuhat, witness in Dumfries, 1506 (Edgar, p. 228). John Makwete was tenant of the lands of Burnokheid, Ayrshire, 1638 (RMS., III, 1807), and Patrick M'Wete was tenant of Brokelhill, Ayrshire, 1533 (ibid., 1319). The name appears in Dornoch in 1603 as M'Kwatt, and there is reference in 1694 to the murder of David Rose alias M'Watt (Rose, p. 386). William McWat in Broomesyde, Lanark, 1711 (Minutes, p. 114). The name is also in current use under the forms M'Ouat, M'Owat, M'Quat, and M'Quhat, and is also Englished Watson. M'Huat 1597.
