MACWHAN, Macwhin: Side forms of Macqueen, q. v., from Gaelic M'Shuibhne. The aspiration of the s causes the name to be pronounced like MacHuin. Michael Macqueen, burgess of Edinburgh and re-founder of Magdalen Chapel in the Cowgate of Edinburgh (PSAS., XXI, p. 267), appears in the Accounts of the Lord High Treaserer (V, VI) between 1516 and 1536 as Makquhen, Makquhane, McQuhenne, McQuhenn, McQuhan, Machquhan, McQuheen, Manthquhen, Maquhon, Mauchquhen, and Makquhan. Malcolm Macquhyn is in record in Bute in 1501 (LCD., p. 205), John Makquhon witnessed an instrument of sasine at Bordland of Laik, Kirkcudbrightshire, 1552 (Laing, 598), and Duncan M'Quhyn was a witness in Glasgow in 1557 (Protocols). Agnes McWhan was charged with being a disorderly person in the parish of Kirkcudbright in 1685 (RPC., 3. ser. IX, p. 573), and Adam or Andrew M'Whan or M'Quhan was shot in the same year for adhering to the Covenant (Mackenzie, History of Scotland, p. 626). The inscription on his tombstone in Kells churchyard is given by Dick (p. 454). M'Quheyne 1563, M'Kquyne 1594, M'Whanne 1682, MacWhinn 1684. The name is also curtailed to Whan and Whin.
