MACWHANNEL, Macwhannell: From Macilwhannell (in Perthshire), q. v. A composition made with Thom M'Quhonale for remission for crimes in 1473 (ALHT., I, p. 4). John Macquhonnell, a follower of the earl of Cassilis, was respited for murder, 1526 (RSS., I, 3386), and William McQuonneill had sasine of lands in Kylismure, Ayr, 1591 (ER., XXII, p. 533). John McIhonel and James McIhonel in Blaieror and Patrick McIwannell in Craigneich ere in record in 1698 (Muthill). Janet McIhonell is in record in Blainror, 1700, and Cristian McIwharinel in Glenlichorn, 1701 (ibid. ). John M'Whonnell in Bargrenan, parish of Minigaff, 1719 (Wigtown). The form Nclwhannell (for nighean mhic Whannell) is found in 1712. The following spellings of this name are found in Wigtownshire in 1684 (Parish, ): McCwhanelle, McQuhandle, McWeennell, Mcquhannil, McVhomel, McWhanell, McWhaneall, McWhannil, McWhanrall, McWhanle, and McWhanlie. The name also occurs in the same district without 'Mac.'
