MACQUARRIE, Macquahrey, Macquarie, Macqurrie, Macwharrie: 'the son of Guaire,' an old Gaelic personal name meaning 'proud' or 'noble, ' from early Gaelic gaurio-s, akin to Gr. γαaροπς 'proud. ' John M'Goyre of Wlua witnessed a charter by John of Yle, earl of Ross, in 1463 (Clan Donald, I, p. 540). In the royal confirmation of this charter his name appears as M'Geir de Ulva (RMS., II, 801). In the Gaelic genealogical manuscript of 1467 the name appears correctly as M'Guaire. Donald McGillecallum McGorre or McQuhorre was tenant of Kyllewane in Kintyre, 1506, and Cillecallum McNeill McQuhore was also a tenant in Kintyre in the same year (ER., XII, p. 698,699, 707). Dunslavy M'Worich oi M'Vorich of Wlway is mentioned in 1509 (ALC., 21 July). Dulleis Makwidy of Ulva had a precept of remission for offences committed by him in 1517 (RSS., I, 2878); and in 1581 complaint was made against Johnne Makquharie 'alias callit the Bent Wowar' (RPC., III, p. 382). Cathell M'Quhorie and Archibald M'Quhoire were two of M'Nachtane's bowmen shipped at Lochkerran in 1627 for service in France (Archaeol. Scot., III, p. 254; HP., I, p. 115). Donald Makquoyrie was retoured heir of Hector Makquoyrie in Ulway, 1630 (Retours, Argyll, 36), and in 1673 decreet was pronounced against John and Donald M'Gourie of Ulva (HP., I, p. 260). Hector M'Gourie or MacQuorrie was tenant of Gometra and Oskamul in 1674 (ibid., p. 280,301), and John M'Warie of Ulva is mentioned in the same year (ibid., p. 265). John M'Quarrie in Lagan was denounced rebel in 1674, and in the following year Hector M'Gourie in Ostamull and Lauchlan M'Gowry, tacksman of Ulva, were similarly denounced (ibid., p. 262,271). Calum MacQewry in Tongue, 1745 (Oban Times). J. H. Macquarrie was attorney-general of Nova Scotia in 1934. A side form of the name is Macwharrie, and this shortened to Wharrie is also in current use. In the Isle of Man the name has become Quarry, and in Ireland it is Gorey (from UaGuaire).
