MACWHINNIE, Macwhinney, Macwinney, Mawhinney, Mewhinney, Macquhenzie: Forms of Mackenzie, q. v., current in Galloway. M'Whunye is still the common Galloway pronunciation of the name. In the Buccleuch mss. the name occers as Makquhynze and M'Quhynze (1526), and Makkynnay (1593). Thomas M'Quhinze was chap. In Ayr in 1502 (Ayr, p. 101), and Donald Makquhinze, a follower of the earl of Cassilis, was respited for murder in 1526 (RSS., I, 3386). William McQuhinny in parish of Cersfern was charged with being a disorderly person, 1684 (RPC., 3. ser. IX, p. 575). Alexander M'Whinnie in Cairnfield in 1739 (Wigtown). In 1684 the name appears in record as McKwhinney, McQuhine, and McWhynie (Parish). See also under Macgillwhinnich.
