MACWILLIE: A Highland border surname from 'Willie, ' a diminutive or pet form of William, q. v. It is now usually spelled Macwilliam. Richard Mc Willy was tenant of Camusbeg in the barony of Doune in 1499 (ER., XI, p. 415), and complaint was made against "tailyeour Makwillie, houshald man to the Lard of Tullebragane" in 1581 (RPC., III, p. 350). In Glenlivet, in the parish of Inveravon, Banffshire, in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries there were many families of this name, and in the records of the middle of the former century the name usually occurs spelled McCullie and McKullie (Celt. Mon. ). It is thus confused with MacCullie, a form of Macgulloch occurring in the north, William M'Willie was a member of the Huntly Volunteers in 1798. Macwyllie is another form in current use.
