(English) Dweller near the common or unenclosed land.
Perhaps from East or West Meon in Hampshire. At the time of the introduction of surnames the adjective mean, as referring to sordidness of character, was unknown. See however Mein.
From Mayon or Mean, a small village in Sennen parish, near the Land's End, where there is a large stone called Table Mean. The name means "the stone." But see Myne.
