This surname probably originated from the two places so named: (1) from Meams in Renfrewshire (An Mhaoirne, "the Stewartry"). Rodlannus or Rothland de Mernes appears as a witness in Paisley, c. 1177 (RMP., p. 49, 74). He is probably the Roland de Mernis who is in record as a witness before 1204 (ibid., p. 15). Margaret Meams appears in Eyemouth in 1653 (Louder). (2) from the district of The Meams, the old name of Kincardineshire. Alexander de Mernys appears in Aberdeen in 1401 (SCM., V, p. 17), and John de Mernys was admitted burgess there in 1408 (NSCM., I, p. 3). Robert de Mernys was chaplain of the parish of Brechin in 1435 (REB., II, 48), in 1466 there is recorded a charter by Alexander de Meirnis, son and heir of William de Meirnis (REA,, I, p. 297), and Will of Mernys was a baxter in Aberdeen in 1469 (CRA., p. 405). In 1476 there is mention of the land of Robert Mernis (without 'de') in Inuerowry (REA., I, p. 311), John de Memys was admitted burgess of Abeideen in 1464, Alexander Meirnys in 1472, and William Mernis in 1473 (NSCM., I, p. 18, 23, 24). Patrick Myrnis, witness at Kyncragy, 1540 (Aboyne, p. 70), Alexander Mernys, reidere at Weik (Wick), 1574 (RMR.), and John Mernis, burgess of Kyntor, 1597 (SCM., I, p. 116), James Mairnes of Sheriffhall, 1670 (Edin.
