All Mates trees in Ireland are related to the Meates trees, except the Mates tree to county Kildare. Only the Mates trees going back to Ireland are part of this genetic tree, not other Mates trees The earliest recording of Mayott found in Ireland is 1653.

Extensive research in early records indicates the surname originated as Mayott in England in Staffordshire. The form was stable from the 1200s until the 1500s, recorded primarily as Mayot, Mayott, and Mayotte. The origin is believed to be the Manor of Rushton James in north Staffordshire. In the 1500s, many other forms arose, including Meate, Meot, Maot, Meyot, and Meyte. The majority of trees later stabilized as Myatt. It is suspected that the Great Vowel Shift change in pronunciation was a key factor in the surname evolution.
DNA testing has confirmed that a large group of documented trees all arose from this surname origin and today have the surname forms Mate, Mates, Meates, Meats and Myatt.
For the surname Mate, only the tree going back to Cheshire is related, and other Mate trees have a different origin.
The second country where the surname Meates evolved is England, and in the Worcestershire. The documented tree starts as Mietts, then Mates, and then evolves to Meates.
