Mederos Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

Mederos is the Hispanic version of the Portuguese surname Medeiros, from Ponte de Lima in Northern Portugal. The earliest individual known with this last name, according to Antonio Machado de Faria, was Rui Gonçalves de Medeiros, who together with Maestre de Avis attacked King Don Juan I of Castilla in the XIV century.

A branch of this family was established in Algarve, Portugal in the XV century. Another branch was established in San Miguel de las Azores (Portugal's Azores Islands) from where they explored Spain's Canary Islands.

The Hispanic version Mederos is originally from The Canary Islands (Spain), and it is rare in continental Spain. Mederos exists in both provinces of Canary Islands: Santa Cruz de Tenerife province and Las Palmas province.

Many Canary Islanders migrated to Cuba (and to a lesser extent to Puerto Rico) at the time that both belonged to Spain, making it easy to travel among the colonies. Many were tobacco growers and moved to the West of Cuba to grow the world-famous Pinar del Rio tobacco.

In South America, it is most common in Uruguay, where there is a significant percentage for such a very small country.
