Medland Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Medland' or 'at the medland,' from residence beside some particular meadowland; v. Medd.
Walter de Medeland, Cambridgeshire, 1273. Hundred Rolls.
1768. Married — John Turner and Elizabeth Medlond: St. George, Hanover Square.
(English) Dweller at the Meadow- Land [Old English mǽd + land]
This name has a 'local' look; but it appears to have been a bye, or additional, name borne at an early period. The Norman grandee, Robert de Beaumont, sometimes styled Meulant or Mellent, was called by the people of Leicester, his tenants, The Medland. Mr. Thompson, in Winchester Vol. of Brit. Archaeolog. Assoc., p. 73. That the name may still be local is shown by the occurrence in the H.R. of a Walter de Medelond, or Medeland.
