A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

Mr. Ferguson thinks that this name corresponds to the Germ, family name Madler, which is probably identical with the Old German Madalhari; but the occurrence in H.R. of one Nich. le Medler rather tends to shew that the name was originally applied to some medieval busybody.

Patronymica Britannica (1860) by Mark Antony Lower

Medler occurs as a U.S. name; and Nich. le Medler is found in H.R. There is also an Old German, Madalhari, and a Modern German, Madler. Förstemann refers the Old German names Madalo and Madelint to the Goth, mathl, an assembly, deliberation; and Madalhari may be from mathl-her, which would translate "a counsellor;" but Le Medler seems to refer to some occupation, and may be derived from German mittler, a mediator; Danish, midler, Swedish, medlare (German, mittlere, mitte, middle).
