This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Medwin.' One of the many personal names with suffix -win; compare Godwin, Unwin, Baldwin, and Goldwin. 'In the unreformed calendar the feast of St. Medwyn stands for Jan. 1' (Lower). 'St Mawdwen (or Modwin) was one of St. Patrick's Irish nuns; and another later Modwin, also Irish, came to England in 840, and educated Edith, daughter of King Ethelwolf, and founded an abbey at Polsworth' (Yonge).
