Meenan Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Ó Mianáin Almost exclusively of Co. Donegal and adjacent areas. SIF 111
This is Ó Mianáin, not to be confused with Ó Mianachain (see Meenaghan, More Irish Families, p. 93). Meenan belongs almost exclusively to Donegal and adjacent counties. It occurs there in an early record, for an Ó Mianáin, O'Donnell's tutor, was hanged at Sligo in 1246 with O'Donnell's foster-brother, these men having been left as hostages to Maurice Fitzgerald. Meenan is one of the few names which are as numerous in the 1890 birth statistics as in those of 1865. In the map of Co. Donegal showing family locations, prepared for me by the late Mr. J. C. MacDonagh, Meenan is placed in the district between Rathmullen and Ramelton.
