Meere Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Ó Midhir A Co. Clare name sometimes corrupted to the English Meares and Myers. SIF 111
In England the name Meer, more usually Meare or Mears is derived from the Old-English mere (lake) or maere (boundary) and occasionally we do find persons called Meeres etc., among the English settlers in Ireland; but these are so few to-day that we may disregard them in this eassay. As an Irish name Meere belongs almost exclusively to Co. Clare. In current voters lists it appears in east, west and central Clare; it is frequent in the 1821 forty-shilling freeholders, especially in the barony of Islands; The prefix O was still retained in the seventeenth century for we meet Hugh and Rory O'Meere in an Inchiquin deed of 1627 and in the same Co. Clare estate the Gaelic form of the name is used in 1693 in the person of Evelin Ni Mire. In the sixteenth century Fiants it is called O'Mire, which is the earliest anglicized form of the Gaelic Ó Midhir. In the case of this name the Fiants must be consulted with caution: O'Mear is used there for the well-known Tipperary name O'Meara. There has been a tendency among some Meere families to adopt Myers as a synonym and when met in Co. Clare Myers is of that Gaelic origin. When found elsewhere in Ireland (e.g. Meares of Mearescourt, Co. Westmeath), these are English names of French origin being derived from mire a word having two distinct meanings, viz. physician and marsh. As early as 1347 the name appearing as de Meer, and de la Mere, resident in Co.
Meath in 1310, is probably the same.
