Meese Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Matthew'. This surname is quite beyond me. I can only suggest that as May, Makin, and Maycock (which see) represented Matthew, and as Makin and Maycock are generally found as Meakin and Mcacock, so Mee may be also a variant of May. There is no doubt that Matthew, through the Old French Mayheu, which was popularized in England, had many nick, forms, some of which are now obsolete. The favourite was May, and this would have variants. All this is corroborated by the existence of Mees and Meeson, corresponding to Mayes and Mayson. Circumstantial evidence, therefore, is entirely in favour of the above suggested solution.
