Meffley Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

Meffley is an American styled adaptation of the original German surname Meffle, which is pronounced relatively the same with a "long E" in it's native tongue. During the industrial revolution the Meffle family like so many other immigrants made its way from there home countries to the United States. It is known that a good portion of the American born children of many of these immigrants either changed their names completely due to racism and to blend in, or changed the original spelling of their surnames out of annoyance, to be pronounced in their correct ways. A large percentage of names during this time period were also made up by the bookkeepers during the immigration process either to keep track of for record purposes, make new ones for orphans and fugitives or to resemble the foreign original without exactly knowing how to spell it.. The name Meffley was made up around the turn of the 20th century by the 2nd and 3rd generation children and descendants of Bernard Meffle who was born a Meffle in Germany and died a Meffley (both pronounced the same) in New York City.
