MEGGINCH: From the old barony of Melginch, now Megginch, in the parish of Errol, Perthshire. Philippus de Melkinh witnessed the confirmation of Tristram's gift of a croft to the monastery of Inchaffray, c. 1208 (Inchaffray, p. 25). The church of Melginch (St. Merlin's) was granted to Holyrood Abbey by David Huviet (misprinted Huniet), Alexander and Philip his sons being witnesses (LSC., p. 52, 53). The last named may be the foregoing Philip, and the same with Philip Vvieth who witnessed a grant by Swan, son of Thor, to the monastery of Scone, c. 1211-14 (Scon, p. 18). The surname was borne later by Duncan de Melginch, who quitclaimed half of the land of Drumkroc in the parish of Melginch to Inchaffray in 1237 (Inchaffray, p. 54), and by Stephen de Melginch (Scon, 116). Stephen of Melginche also witnessed a charter by Malcolm, seventh earl of Fife, c. 1228 ( Laing, 6). If Balursin, a place name in the Scone charter "is Balhousie (in 1422 Balulsi). we may infer that the family later on dropped their local surname and, resuming their original patronymic, became the Eviots of Balhousie who subsisted down to the close of the sixteenth century" (Inchaffray, p. 273).
