The family comes from a place called Lugo, a province of Spain, where the municipality of Meira, (Autonomous Community of Galicia) is located.
The oldest of the family was called Rodrigo Afonso de Meira. He went to Portugal in 1369, where he built the Solar and "Quinta dos Meiras" , which became known as lord of the land of Meira and forming a family.He married Ouruana Paes Correia and had as his son Dom Rodrigo Meira. The Coat of Arms was granted in 1451, to Dom Afonso Nunes de Meira, who was the first of the Portuguese lineage and had much prestige at the Court of Dom Duarte, (Thirteenth King of Portugal).
The first Meiras of Brazil that lived in Serro frio - MG in the early eighteenth century, were two brothers, Marcos de Meira and Luiz de Meira, children of Baltazar de Meira, descendants of the noble Dom Heitor de Meira, member of the court of D. João I, from there the family branched to Bahia, RJ, SP, SC and RS. Among those who went to Bahia was Jose de Souza Meira, Captain of Militia who was the father of Francisco de Souza Meira, Captain Mor of ordinances, endowed with a spirit of adventure and ambition that at the end of the eighteenth century became "Bandeirante "And departed with a handful of adventurers from the coast of the province of Bahia toward the wilderness facing setbacks and sacrifices. After long days, it finally reached the slopes of the Serra das Almas.It was the first obstacle to overcome, Francisco S. In the end the winners were the Portuguese, and after the native resistance, the bandeirante settled with his group in the discovered locality baptizing it with the name of "Conquest", this perhaps for the victorious struggle that he had with the natives.
