(from the name of a male ancestor) There are two developments of this name. One is from Mordecai. Meisel, or Maizel, is an affectionate diminutive of Mordecai and goes back to the middle of the sixteenth century. A descendant of one of the early families bearing this name founded the famous Meisel’s Synagogue in Prague. This name also appears in the form Meislish or Maizlish. A second development of this name is from Moshe (Moses). One form of the diminutive of Moshe is Meisel. Popularly, this was often associated with the Yiddish for “mouse,” but it has nothing to do with the rodent. Nevertheless, in the Prague cemetery, on a tombstone of a women who died in 1614 and whose family name was Meisel, a mouse is inscribed on the stone.
