From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Of territorial origin from the old barony of Meldrum (Melgedrum) in Aberdeenshire. Philip de Melgedrum and his son William de Melgedrum were witnesses to the charter by Alexander Cumyn, earl of Ruchan, founding the hospital of Turriff. This Philip, or his father, seems to have been earlier known as 'de Federg.' Alexander de Melgedrom or Melgedrum witnessed a quitclaim of Reeth Waldef in Fife in 1278 (RD., p. 52,53). David de Melkedrum of the county of Fife and William de Melkedrom, sheriff of Aberdeen in 1292, rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 140,209). In 1306-7 Thomas, son and heir of William de Melkedrum, a minor, petitioned that he may have reasonable sustenance, etc. (ibid., p. 527). William de Melgedrum was one of the "bergenses rure manentes" in Aberdeen in 1317 (SCM., V, p. 10), and Philip de Meldrome witnessed the grant of the barony of Dalkeith to William de Douglas in 1341 (RHM., II, 45). William de Meldrwm witnessed charters of confirmation by Robert the Steward in 1358 (Inchaffray, p. 126), and a later Willelmus de Meldrom was present at perambulation of the boundaries of Kyrknes and Louchor in 1395 (RPSA., p. 3). William Myldrum, Scots prisoner of war, was beheaded in 1402 (Bain, IV, 646). Meldrum of that Ilk failed in an heiress, Elizabeth de Meldrum, who married William de Seton (son of Sir Alexander de Seton) who fell at the battle of Rrechin in 1452 (AEI., p. 52). Floremundus Meldrum was juror on assize at Liston in 1459 (Edmonstone, 80), Thomas de Meldrum was admitted burgess of Aberdeen in 1477 (NSCM., I, p. 26), and John Meldrum, Scottish merchant, had a safe conduct to travel in England in 1486 (Bain, IV, 1517).
