A Guide to Irish Names (1964) by Edward MacLysaght

This name appears in the Annals of Loch Cé as Ó Maolgeric in 1088 and Ó Maelrioc in 1218in both cases recording the death of poets of outstanding distinction. Woulfe mentions the former and correctly states the modern Gaelic form of the name to be Ó Maoilgheiric which can be accepted, for we find O'Mulgherick in the Fiants as an early anglicized form. This occurs in a list of pardons of Inishowen people. Thename is rare: in modern times it is associated with Youghal and other places in east Cork where Mullerick and Millerick have been noted as variants of the more usual Mellerick. Woulfe says that in Mayo it has been corrupted to Mulderrig: if that is so it would mean that the family mentioned in the Annals of Loch Cé may still be extant; but I have found no evidence that any of the Mulderrigs of north Connacht are not true Mulderrigs.
