Mellish Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Melhuish,' a place in Devon.
William de Melehywis, Devon, Henry III-Edward I: Testa de Nevill, sive Liber Feodorum, temp. Henry III-Edward I.
John de Melewis, Devon, ibid.
Elinora de Melhywys, Devon, 1273. Hundred Rolls.
1674. Married — Robert Mellish and Anne Smith: St. Michael, Cornhill.
Driving through Dalton-in-Furness in Oct. 1887, I saw 'Mellish' over a small shop in the Marketplace. I wondered how it had got there. The mystery was easily explained. The town is largely peopled with Cornishmen, who work at the iron-ore mines.
(Celtic + Hebrew) v. Mellis, (English) an assimilated form of Melhuish, q.v.
Hals mentions these, among five others, as the names of the chief inhabitants of Penrin in Gluvias. He says, "The name Melhuish is local, viz., from the barton or tenement of Melhuish, near Kirton in Devon, which signifies a lark-bird, or larks." The Cornish has certainly melhuez, a lark, which Pryce derives from mel-huez, a sweet breath; or, says he, the bird may perhaps be so named from pelhudz, a high flight. The local name however can hardly be derived from a lark; and the last syllable is probably from wich, wick, a dwelling. Mellhuish, Mellish, Mehuish, and Mellows would seem to be the same name.
Melhuish or Melluish is a very ancient Devonshire name. In the Hundred Rolls we read of Elenora de Melhywys, of Melhywys, a seat in the barony of Okehampton. Thomas Melhinche of this county (evidently a misprint for Melhuishe) contributed £25 for the defence of his country at the time of the invasion of the Spanish Armada in 1588 (Sp.). A gentle family of Melhuish resided at Witheridge in the 16th and 17th centuries (W.). Richard Melhuish was a Tiverton churchwarden in 1656 (D.). Richard Melhuish was mayor of Barnstaple in 1708 (G.). The name still occurs in Witheridge and Tiverton.
