MELRURNE: Perhaps from Milburne near Ponteland, Northumberland, old spellings of which are Meleburna (1202) and Melleburn (1255). Magister H. de Melleberne who was one of the witnesses to a charter by John de Morham, c. 1219—46 (RAA., I, 24) may be the Hugh de Melbume who witnessed a confirmation charter by David, bishop of St. Andrews re the church of Wemyss, c. 1233-55 (Soltre, p. 26), and in 1240, as H. de Melleburne, witnessed a charter to Holyrood Abbey (LSC., 76; RD., p. 71.)
