From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Vulgarized forms of Melvlle, which see. On the northeast coast pronounced Mellon (Innes, p. 50). James Melville, the Reformer, in his Diary spells his own name indifferently Melville and Melvin, even on the same page (e.g. p. 87 , 238). The variant spelling is also found as early as the twelfth century. Galfridus Malevin witnessed a confirmation charter by William the Lion to Ralph Frebem, c. 1161-63 (SCM., IV, p. 242), and c. 1165 Galfridus de Maleuin is mentioned in another charter (LSC., 27). Andrew Malvyn was burgess of Abirbrothoc, 1387 (RAA., II, 39), John the Malewyn was one of assize on the marches of Woodwrae, 1388 (Bamff, p. 22). Alexander Malvyn witnessed resignation of the lands of Wolle, 1474, and John Malewyn witnessed a charter by Archibald, earl of Douglas, in same year (Home, 22). Thomas Malwyn was tenant of Balgrescho, 1482 (Cupar-Angus, I, p. 232). David Melvill, Aberdeen printer in the seventeenth century, appears in record as David Mailing, and Barbara Mailling was married in Edinburgh, 1633 (Edinb. Marr.). The old name of Mailingsland (Traquair) was Meluinsland, from one or other of the Melvilles who rendered homage in 1296. Melwine 1637.
