Menna Barreto is a surname which originated in the southern most state of Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul, in the 18th century. It was created by the marriage between João de Deus Barreto and Rita Bernarda Cortes de Figueiredo Menna, combining both surnames. João de Deus was viscount and baron of the city of São Gabriel, alongside serving the military, reaching the post of marshal, leading armies in countless wars for the Brazilian Empire. His descendants would keep the military tradition, with many achieving high ranks in the army, like general, giving the family recognition in the military scope. Alongside that, many persued carrers in medicine, founding succesful clinics all over the southern region of Brazil. For all of that, the family is well known in Rio Grande do Sul for it's achviements and protection of the state in the countless war it was waged upon.
