User-submitted Reference

The Menyweather/Minnieweather surname occurs in many variants and is apparently mostly or solely an African-American name.

It first occurs in the 1840 US census with the personages of James A Mineweather and John Mennyweather. It is likely an Anglicisation of one of a number of German surnames that immigrated to The United States in the mid-19th century; such as Meinweser, Manweller or Manweiler. It appears the original German source surname may be Mannweiler. This surname is a locational surname, derived from the settlement Mannweiler in Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany.

The surname appears sporadically in England in the 18th century as Man(e)yweather. It appears to have been an immigrant surname with forenames such as Mille. These families appear to have died out or significantly changed spelling.
