1575. Richard Meredith, Radnorshire: Register of the University of Oxford.
I remember seeing a curious pun in an epitaph in Marshfield Church, recorded by Rudder in his History Gloucestershire. The monument is to the memory of A. Meredeth. A rhyming epitaph ends thus: 'Judge, then, what he did lose who lost but breath. Lived to die well, and dyed A Meredith?
(Celtic) the O.Welsh Maredud(d (dd=th [? the Mod. Welsh marwddydd, ‘mortal day ’—marw, mortal; dydd, day] Maredud ap Ywein.—[Meredith son of Owain] Brut y Tywysogion, A.D. 985.

Madawc the son of Maredudd possessed Powys within its boundaries, from Por- foed to Gwauan in the uplands of Arwystli.—‘The Dream of Rhonabwy:’ Mabinogion, tr. Guest.
(Welsh) Descendant of Maredudd (sea lord).
An ancient Welsh personal or baptismal name.
This family is of British origin. Old chronicles relate that the first settlement of the family was situated on the Welsh shore, where the sea washed in with great impetuosity and noise, from whence it is added they took the name of Meredyth, or Ameredith. Maredydd, Welsh, the animated one.
From Mirridith; a location name in Herefordshire.
Herefordshire is the principal home of the Merediths, who are also to be found in North and South Wales, Shropshire, Monmouthshire, and Gloucestershire. Several of the mayors of Hereford in the 16th and 17th centuries bore this name (P.).
User-submitted Reference
The original spelling was "Maredudd", pronounced "Mahredeeth". In the Welsh language and in English speaking Wales, the accent and stress is always on the penultimate syllable, the modern correct pronunciation is therefore - Mer (as in "Myrrh") Rheh d'ith. Said quickly it almost becomes M'redith. The incorrect pronunciation that strikes the name outside of the Welsh borders is the one widely accepted in the U.S. and the rest of Britain, which curiously causes "Merry" to be a suitable shortening. Other seemingly unrelated but correct pet or short forms of the name are Priddy, Preedy, Preddy, Bedo, Bedoes etc.
Meredith is an Anglicized form of Welsh, Meredudd, earlier (Middle Welsh) Maredud(d). The word is transparently a two-member compound. The second component of which goes back to the Old Welsh iud(d), meaning 'lord' (Indo-European *youdhyos). Cf. the -ith in Meredith and Griffith are not of this derivation, but related to the Old Welsh, moriud, meaning 'sea warrior', or 'sea lord'. In his Language and History in Early Britain (1953:346), Kenneth Jackson has marshaled a history of the name's transformations from the Annales Cambriae forward: Morgetiud > Margetiud > Margetud >Maredud(d) > Meredith.
