The Meregulwa name means 'food is bought from the market'. Originating from a man called Meregulwa Musa, a brother to Katagaya who lived his life from 1890s-1980s in the newly formed district of Luuka. Meregulwa was naturally weak and couldn't afford to go digging to get food. He could therefore go to his big brother Katagaya, close friends, fellow Muslims and perhaps some relatives to get some money for food. So he entirely relied on food from the market.
The name comes from the words emere (food) and gulwa (bought).
Its presence is high in the Busoga region mainly given to second born males in the Bugwano clan Meregulwa was the second born in the family.
It's also common in some clans of Buganda in central Uganda though it's meaning isn't so clear in this region. It's believed that due to family expansion and other factors, some people from Bugwano Clan in Busoga migrated to central Uganda, particularly Buganda region and started using the name to keep the memories alive.
