This surname was Mallet in Rouen, Normandy, France in the early 1500. In 1598, when the family settled in Champagne, France, they changed the spelling to Merlet. In 1658 Merlett (the family was living in Germany at the time). In 1693 the spelling was Melott (the family emigrated to New York, and settled in New Jersey), in 1725 the spelling changed to Mellott.
