MERLAY: Randulphus de Merlai witnessed a charter by Prince Henry in favor of Eustace Fitzjohn, granted at Seleschirche (Hartshorne, Feudal and military antiquities of Northumberland, 1858, II, App., p. cxv). Kok de Merley, a cleric, appears a. 1200 (RHM., I, 3). William de Merlay, a Norman, received the site on which he built Morpeth Castle, in return for his aid in crushing the Northumbrian rebellion against William the Conqueror. Roger de Merlay witnessed the gift by Philip de Pelhcox of meadowland in Pitcox to the monks of Melrose in the reign of Alexander II (Melros, p. 221,222). Ricardus de Merlay or de Merlei witnessed confirmation of the gift of the church of Cragyn (Craigie in Kyle) to the monks of Paisley, c. 1272 (RMP., p. 232). Robert de Merleye 'persone del eglise de Westerker,' of the county of Rokesburk, rendered homage in 1296. His seal bears for device, a monster, and S' Roberti de Herlei (Rain, II, p. 209,555). Rogier de Merleye of the county of Lanerk and Wauter de Merlegh of the county of Rokesberk also rendered homage in 1296 (ibid., p. 211,213).
