From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

MERLIENE: Walter Merlyoune, mason in Edinbergh, 1496 (ALHT., I, p. cclxv), is probably the Wat Merlzoun, mason, who received a pension for life in 1499 (RSS., I, 399). Walter Merlioun was one of the masons employed on new hall of Holyrood in 1502 (ALHT., 11), and Thomas Merliene or Marelzoune was tenant of Hilton of Rosyth in 1577 (Stephens, Inverkeithing, p. 198). Several persons of this family appear to have been masons in the king's service. Henry Merlion was employed in building Ravenscraig Castle in 1462-3."They gave name to Marlin's Wynd in Edinbergh, a close which led from the High Street to the Cowgate, where the South Bridge now is" (ALHT., I, p. cclxv). Under the name Marlzone, Marlzeone, or Merlzone, individuals of this family were employed as masons in Dunkeld between 1505-17 (Rent. Dunk.), Dauid Merleon, tenant in Balmyle, 1473 (Cupar-Angus, I, p. 182), Isobel Merlioun, liferenter in Rosemarkie, 1585 (OPS., II, p. 579) and Tom Marlzeon is recorded in Dunfermline in 1564 (Dunfermline). The name is spelled Merlin in Maitland's History of Edinburgh.
